Japan's Mitsubishi Corp and Shell plan to produce 400,000 tonnes of ‘green hydrogen’ in 2030 through the companies' European offshore wind power project, according to international news agency.

Dutch renewable energy firm Eneco, owned by Mitsubishi and Japan's Chubu Electric Power Co will invest 10% in a joint venture that includes Shell, Norway's Equinor and others, for the project.

The project will utilize wind power to produce hydrogen instead of natural gas in a bid to reduce the fuel's carbon footprint.

In its 2021 Shell Sustainability Report, chief executive officer, Ben van Beurden, says, “Our Powering Progress strategy, which we launched in 2021, sets out how Shell can play a leading role in helping the world to reduce its carbon emissions. At the heart of our strategy lies our own target to become a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050, in step with society’s progress in achieving the Paris climate goals. In this, our 25th Sustainability Report, we share how we are working towards our Powering Progress goals.”
