EDF Renouvelables commissions two solar power plants in Egypt

EDF Renouvelables, a subsidiary of the French electrician specialized in renewable energies, said it has commissioned two solar power plants in Egypt with its local partner Elsewedy Electric with a total installed capacity of 130 megawatts peak (MWp). A peak watt, the unit used to rate the performance of photovoltaic panels, will deliver one watt under peak solar irradiation.

“After the opening of our Cairo subsidiary, it is an important step in the development of EDF Renouvelables in Egypt and more broadly in the renewable market in North Africa”, replied Bruno Bensasson, CEO of EDF Renewable in a statement.

These projects located in southern Egypt, in the province of Aswan, benefit from a 25-year electricity sales contract with the Egyptian national distributor (EETC).

These two plants are part of the Benban complex that will soon total 1,800 MWp in a country that aims to produce 20% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.

EDF Renewables, whose installed capacity in the world reaches 12.5 GW, also benefits from it to strengthen its positions in the North African solar market since it already has in the region 180 MWp of installed photovoltaic capacity and 800 MW to be built as part of a project won in Morocco in May.

This acquisition of photovoltaic installations is part of EDF's CAP 2030 strategy, which aims to double its renewable capacity between 2015 and 2030, in France and internationally, to reach 50 gigawatts (GW).
