China's annual power generation from renewable energy sources will reach 3.3 trillion kWh by 2025 amid efforts to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals, according to a plan covering 2021 to 2025.
The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) along with nine government organizations said that power generation through renewable energy sources in 5 years’ time will account for over half of total electricity consumption.
According to the plan, 2025, renewable energy consumption will amount to the equivalent of saving 1 billion tonnes of standard coal.
China will build storage facilities and upgrade its power grids to feature intelligent functions, in an effort to accommodate the development of clean energy, the plan stated.
China, the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter, is also the key growth driver of renewable power capacity installation globally. Solar and wind power installations have surged in recent years.
As regards to energy security, China still has to depend on coal despite pledges to contribute to global efforts to reduce emissions. China has said that it cannot afford to halt coal production as the country lacks their own oil and gas resources.
The latest UN climate report says China needs to accelerate efforts to decarbonize, including reducing coal consumption.
