Russian gas conglomerate Gazprom has set a new world record in laying offshore gas pipelines according to a statement released by the company’s PR team.

In the statement, the Russian gas behemoth said that it had surpassed the previous record within the framework of its current Turk-Stream project. The record of 6.27km per-day was set by the Pioneering Spirit pipe-laying vessel.

In addition to this, it was further disclosed that by mid-July Gazprom had laid over 1,230km of pipes of the Turk-Stream gas pipeline which accounted for 66% of the total length of the offshore segment of the project.

Gazprom commenced construction on the offshore section of the Turk-Stream project which is located close to the Russian Black Sea coast in May 2017. The ambitious and complex project involved the construction of the gas pipeline through the Black Sea to the European part of Turkey and further to the border with Greece.

It has been projected that the length of the sea part of the pipe is expected to be at around 930km, the overland part located on the Turkish territory is believed to be around 180km.

According to sources close to Gazprom, the first line is expected to be intended for the Turkish market, the second - for gas supply to the countries of South and South-Eastern Europe. The capacity of each line reaches 15.75 billion cubic meters of gas per year.
