“This acquisition reinforces Engie's leading position in the onshore wind energy market with 1,900 MW of installed capacity in France,” the group said in a statement. No financial items were disclosed.
Founded in 2005, Sameole was previously owned by the investment firm Samfi-Invest, and has developed a portfolio of projects mainly in northwestern and southwestern France.
This is the second acquisition this year for Engie in renewable energies in France, after that of the Breton company Langa last June. It is part of Engie's strategy to develop nearly 3 GW of wind power and nearly 2.2 GW of solar power by 2021.
The renewable energy sector is experiencing a period of consolidation in France, marked in particular by the acquisition of Direct Energie by Total in April, the main alternative energy supplier in France, which itself had acquired Quadran in 2017. Last year, EDF also bought the Futuren wind energy developer.
