MP Sethrida Geagea announced at a press conference that the Cedar International Festival’s governing body kicked off an initiative called “Smart Forest” to protect Lebanon’s biodiversity and natural landscape. The project, created and funded by Lebanese tech company Eurisko Mobility and its founders Edgard Tawk and Ziad Tawk, will help early detection and prevention of fire outbreaks as well as monitor and map sites all over the Lebanese territory through AI, machine learning, and IoT devices. Each site costs $100,000, Geagea said. As a first step, the new project will be implemented in seven sites:

  • The Cedars of God, Bcharre
  • Sfire forest, Dannieh
  • Jabal Moussa natural reserve, Kesserwan
  • Mtein forests, Matn
  • Forests near Al Chouf natural reserve, Al Chouf
  • Debbieh forest, Al Chouf
  • Arnoun natural reserve, Nabatieh

This move will seek to develop Lebanon’s ecotourism industry and encourage visitors to the Cedars nature reserve.

The decision to invest in the project was taken in part after the devastating forest fires that ravaged Lebanon in October.
