Lebanese caretaker Minister of Energy and Water Cesar Abi Khalil has launched the implementation phase of a study the Ministry had launched in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Lebanese American University (LAU), to identify the financial and environmental impact of electric and hybrid cars.

Electric cars are being tested in Lebanon as part of the study which will be concluded in March when ensuing recommendations will be taken into account to undergo the next phase towards the deployment of electric vehicles in Lebanon

H.E. Cesar Abi Khalil said that the study was conducted in the framework of the budget for 2018 which allowed for an 80% decrease on hybrid cars’ customs tariffs and lifted all customs tariffs on electric cars. These measures were taken as a first step towards reducing dependence on gas and carbon and shifting to the use of clean energy resources.

“This initiative goes hand in hand of Lebanon’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 12% in 2020 and by 15% by 2030. Our current efforts show that we are capable of reaching this goal in order to shift from polluting fuel to clean energy,” he said.
