Nokia is showcasing a range of innovative technology solutions to enhance the capability of communications networks for power utilities at Saudi Arabia Smart Grid (SASG) 2018 in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The innovations are designed to enable utilities to integrate diverse energy sources, including distributed renewable energy resources, with better real-time control over the grid. This approach allows improved monitoring, leading to more efficient service delivery and superior customer experience. It also helps utilities transition to new business models.

The demonstrations include the Nokia Bell Labs Future X architecture for next-generation utility companies to boost control and enable new business models; analytics applications that enable utilities to enhance the value from their processes and grid assets; and private LTE networks which enable automation and broaden the distribution grid connectivity for integration of renewable energy sources. Nokia also showcases a joint testbed with the University of Strathclyde to help utilities prepare power grids for emerging technologies through improved communications capabilities. This helps drive innovation and minimize risk as utilities adopt new business models. Solutions for extending broadband services to consumers will also be highlighted.

Kamal Ballout, head of Transport, Energy and Public Sector (TEPS) MEA and the Global Energy Sector at Nokia, said, “We are excited to demonstrate the latest communication technology innovations for power utilities and energy companies. It will empower them to improve operational efficiency by automating their processes. Furthermore, they will be able to integrate newer sources of energy in the grid and use real-time monitoring for better control. We are committed to supporting the utility sector in Saudi Arabia and across the Middle East and Africa market in its digital transformation with secure advanced communication solutions.”
