A third unit has begun to produce liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Yamal in the Russian Arctic ahead of time, announced Russian giant Novatek, main shareholder in this giant project, confirming its intention to set up a fourth production line.

The third “train” (a line of treatment and liquefaction of gas) has begun to produce LNG, according to Novatek, shareholder of 50.1% in the Yamal LNG project, whose French Total holds 20%.

“We have not only launched the three technology trains on budget, but also launched the third LNG train more than a year ahead of what was originally planned,” says Novatek.

“The three LNG trains’ total capacity is 16.5 million tons per year, or 5.5 million tons per year per train,” says the group.

In the statement, Novatek also confirmed the recently announced project of a “fourth innovative LNG train”, in addition to the three planned initially.

The Yamal LNG project, which also includes Chinese shareholders (CNPC for 20% and Silk Road Fund for 9.9%), was inaugurated with all pomp by Russian President Vladimir Putin last December. Its particularity is to operate in extreme climatic and geological conditions.

Thirty kilometers away, Novatek will launch a second project called Arctic LNG 2, in which Total plans to take 10%.
